NHS Health Checks

Free NHS Health Checks – are you aged between 40 & 74 years old?

NHS Health Checks are being offered to people aged between 40 and 74 once every five years. The check is to assess your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, kidney disease or diabetes. If there are any warning signs, then together we can do something about it.

By taking early action, you can improve your health and prevent the onset of these conditions. There is good evidence for this.

The check should take about 20–30 minutes and is based on straightforward questions and measurements such as age, sex, family history, height, weight and blood pressure.

Before the health check appointment we will need you to attend the surgery for a simple fasting blood test and blood pressure measurement. Please contact the surgery and ask for a Health Check blood test/blood pressure appointment. We will book your actual health check appointment at a time convenient to you after your blood test appointment. Please find information on preparing for a fasting blood test at the bottom of this page.

During the check you will receive free personalised advice about what you can do to stay healthy.

FASTING BLOOD TEST instructions
Some blood tests taken to check cholesterol and glucose (blood sugar) values need to be taken after you have fasted.
Your appointment will be in the morning, so please begin your fast at midnight the night before. Eat normally prior to this.
Be sure to drink plenty of water and to take your tablets as usual throughout the evening and on the morning before the test.
Do not drink milk or take sugar or eat solids during the fast as this will spoil the test.
Eat normally again after your blood test.
